First Time Thru the Locks

If you boat on the river, sooner or later you will want to go to the next pool.  You can only get up or down the river from your current pool by going thru the locks or trailer the boat by truck.  We decided it was time to try the locks at Willow Island as our first experience.

I had the hand held radio, but did not know what channel to use, so I used my cell phone to call the lock-master.  He was very nice and told me to use channel 13 if I wanted to contact them by radio.  There is also a rope to pull to let them know you are there.

Approaching the locks on a small motor boat can make you feel VERY small, especially if there are any barges waiting to go thru.  Sometimes you have to wait your turn since a small boat is not commercial traffic.

We approached the lock after we received to green go signal from the light on the side of the lock wall.

It was a bit of a trick fending the boat off the wall since there was only one post close to us.  We used the boat hooks and did pretty well for our first time.  You feel like you are in a big cavern as you wait for the water level to rise.  It is quite an interesting experience the first time.

It wasn’t too difficult and very interesting.  Guess we will be able to see more of the river now.

Sternwheel Festival Marietta, OH 2011

Sternwheel Festival in Marietta is always the highlight of boating season.  Sternwheel is the second weekend in September.  The are fantastic fireworks on Saturday night and there are over 100,000 people in the normally, small sleepy city of Marietta. The best place to watch the fireworks are on the levee or from a boat!  There are always a lot of sternwheelers visiting and they have sternwheel races on Sunday.

Welcome to Boating Days

Welcome to Boating Days.  I hope the photos and stories will be interesting and inspire other boaters to post their memories, too.  Sometimes, all we have are our memories. Sharing them is fun and takes a person back to some great times in their lives.

It is dead of winter in Ohio now and only my wonderful memories of boating on the Ohio will get me thru this time of gray days, cold winds and lack of sunshine.  Those great days and evenings on the Ohio are still fresh in my mind.

Remembering the memories and posting photos of those fun times is almost as good as a trip down South during January or February.  If I had a pocket full of cash, I would trailer my boat down South, but my budget only allows me to dream of such an adventure now.

I am sure there are many other boaters who feel the same way.  Great photos and stories are just waiting to be shared.  This is a place to share those memories with others.  A cyberspace vacation area to sit around and talk about the good old days of last summer!

Beautiful Winter Day on the Ohio

Ducks on the Levee 2012

It’s 56 degrees with full sunshine and the date is January 7, 2012.  Seems like time to put the boat back in, but I think it is just a joke from Mother Nature.  A day to enjoy, but not to go boating yet.  The sun feels great and the water is pretty on the January day.  Can’t be long before Spring arrives – I hope!

Catching Fish

Sometimes we catch fish and sometimes we don’t.  It really doesn’t make any difference if you enjoy the time on the water. Sometimes we catch a fish and it gets away before the camera snaps the photo!

A trip on the river

I enjoy a day on the river even when I don’t catch anything or even get a strike, it is just quiet and peaceful.

My First Power Boat

I watched boats cruise up and down the Ohio River for the last 30 years and never thought about buying one.  I always thought of a boat as a “dark hole that you throw you money into.”  After meeting a friend that had a bass boat, I thought it would be fun to have something a bit more comfortable.  He had been watching an old Citation 23 foot cuddy cabin for sale up in St. Mary’s, WV.  Once he told me about it, I just had to take a look for myself.  Well, most people know what that means!  I saw the boat and knew it had to be mine.  It was a great kick when we went for the test ride and they brought the boat out of the hole and up on plane!  Something I never experienced since I had been a sailor in the 1970′s and the sail boats were much slower.  They were still a thrill to sail, but nothing is like that feeling when the motor revs up and that boat almost flies out of the water to plane.  I still get goosebumps sometimes when I bring my boat up on plane.

We had quite a few adventures with the first Citation.  We were towed 3 times and almost were swept down the Ohio River one time when the motor stopped on us.  We changed the electric module and thought that was it.  NO, towed once again.  We changed the coil and that worked for awhile.  Towed again.  Finally realized my local boat mechanic needed to give her a good tune up.  After that, our towing days were over.

I learned a lot about maning/womaning a motor boat.  Quite a challenge and great fun.  I learned to dock and adjust the trim for maxium plane speed.

We spent the summer learning about all the fun places along the Ohio River near Marietta, OH.  We even trailered the boat to other pools so we could see what was beyond the locks.  Sometimes it was just easier to trailer the boat and fill it up with gas than find gas at marinas along the river.

Trip to New Hampshire to buy my Sea Ray 220DA

I looked all summer for a nice, old cabin cruiser that I could afford.  Earlier in the Spring, I had purchased a 1987 23 foot Citation Cuddy Cabin.  It was the first power boat I ever owned.  Early in the 1970′s I owned a Dragon sailboat and never thought about using a power boat!  How things change as we get older.  I also live on the Ohio River and sailing is not the ideal boating activity. I met a great friend who owned a bass boat.  It was nice, but not comfortable for cruising.  After using the Citation, I realized it was difficult to get down into the cabin half bent over, so started dreaming of a cabin cruiser with head room.

After spending hours on Ebay, I found a great Sea Ray 220DA way up in New Hampshire.  I guess the boat gods were in my corner and I won the great of boat for a very reasonable price. So it was off to New Hampshire to get the new cruiser, a 1400 mile round trip.

It was a long drive with an overnight stay along the way.  Once in NH, I got my first look at the Sea Ray.
